 February 7th is International Clash Day. I've always thought that Victor Jara mentioned in the Clash song 'Washington Bullets' was 'merely' some political leader tortured by Pinochet. But after reading The Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein I've found out he was much more than just one of the 'nameless' tens of thousands peaceful and unarmed workers, students and farmers tortured by the US-backed Dictatorship.

 Allende's supporters were absolutely peaceful and unarmed, he took power through democracy. Yes their were guns in the presidential palace when the tanks surrounded the place and started blowing it to bits but which presidential palace doesn't have guns in it? Are you talking about the right country? I know the Marxists in Peru did terrorism but as far as I can find none of that stuff happened in Chile. To paraphrase Naomi Klien: "to the world Chile looked like a war zone, except in this war there was only one side".

 I don't want to turn this into a political argument, lets just say I was a witness and participant in many of the events connected to that conflict and even interacted with some key players. I used to get angry when I see how many people in the First World are grossly misinformed about that time, having pop culture and Hollywood as their main source of "knowledge" of the subject. Nowadays it just makes me sad.
