Yes their were guns in the presidential palace when the tanks surrounded the place and started blowing it to bits but which presidential palace doesn't have guns in it? Are you talking about the right country? I know the Marxists in Peru did terrorism but as far as I can find none of that stuff happened in Chile. I don't want to turn this into a political argument, lets just say I was a witness and participant in many of the events connected to that conflict and even interacted with some key players. I used to get angry when I see how many people in the First World are grossly misinformed about that time, having pop culture and Hollywood as their main source of "knowledge" of the subject. Nowadays it just makes me sad.
