The hardest characters for me to draw are Sydney and Waccoon. I've been trying to draw Sydney like how Coon drew him recently and I think this looks better than before I hope. For some reason I find Sydney's and Wac's head construction so complex or something. I think it's getting better... Jazz Pirate is hard to draw too.
Sydney @ Friday, September 27th 2013, 3:03 PM

I guess it is kinda hard when you consider they have wider faces, which I attribute to the bone structure of the canine jaw and skull. In all my years of drawing I've never truly pinned it down.

And here is my tarp toilet! And my tarp bookcase! And my tarp Cuisinart!

Sydney's head is difficult because the bridge of the muzzle is flat. It's easier to think of the skull more in the shape of a squirrel than a wolf. Nothing wrong with a unique design, but yeah, it's tricky.

From the front, Wac is actually very easy once you learn the lower curvature of the cheeks. His head is just a full circle. From the side things get tricky because the head makes no sense 3-dimentionally. I bought some modeling clay, and I really should make a proper model one of these days.

That last panel demands the sound effect of "Dun, dun dunnnnnn!"

Best reference I've found for the head and muzzle is here: http://tinyurl.com/kfzt48q The bridge of it flattens out right between the eyes down to the nose. And if you look here: http://tinyurl.com/ljko7fe I get his cheeks from all the fluff on either side. I'm just more cartoony.

Well, here is my first upload. I am new here, so I hope the picture doesn't break some laws, like being too weird or something. Drawn with Graf2X and I wasn't stoned, just a little inebriated. It is my first try at oekaki (I think it should be oekaki by technique).

Welcome to the oekaki, and if there are any laws against weirdness here, *I* sure don't know about them! This is a really great picture, I love the monochromatic illustration style. It's like a sepia-toned woodblock print!

if there was a boundary line for 'weirdness' we'd probably have a contest or theme to see who could step as far over that line as possible, here.

This looks really dramatic and neat! I actually got a huge laugh because after I read the title " i gave up, and started thinking of Richard Belzier, even though that's not his name" I was imagining the character on the far left saying it to the other two, and the whole thing took on a severely surreal mood.

In other words, good work!

i like the other perceptions you guys have better than what i was aiming for in the beginning (and lost sight/track of)

I was originally trying to draw a parody of the outlaw star / uh, some other anime where the ship was navigated by a naked chick (or dude) in water in a tube, and was going to have a teddy bear and a little girl drawing graffiti, like faces around her bewbs, moustaches, etc... then i got frustrated with my mouse/oekaki skills and decided to do what... well, i like to look at, which is nice curves, even if i feel like i'm hacking at a drawing with random usage of the belzier curves. (i'm all law and order suv, drinking ice t, with my man richard belzier) :)

...i actually did know the history of the belzier curve, and how it was used in car design, at one point. I first saw it in i think deluxe paint 2 or whatever the precursor to deluxe paint was.

I've been up over 24 hours... still haven't retouched this.
thanks for the comments!

Well if anyone ever complains you're putting their character through the wringer unfairly, all you have to do is point to this. That device could be renamed the Spanish Inquisition, because I doubt anyone has ever expected it!

Also the words "I don't know if I like that kind of individualism" written over a spread polar bear butt should be the emblem for something.

There's actually three of them, Freedom, Enterprise and Credence. Freedom and Enterprise only appear shortly and were killed by Tex in a chain of events later described by Tex. It was kind of an unseen scene if that makes any sense. It's things like this that make my comics sometimes very difficult to follow.

So my tablet finally broke a while back, which means any kind of creative spark I might have had went to waste really quick. Tonight I decided to experiment a bit, so I went into Shi and tried to create something the way I did in the days before my first tablet. The majority of this was done with the Line/Freehand/Fill tools on a regular mouse, and like I predicted, it's crap.

I want to go back to my teenage years and kick myself in the teeth for thinking I was even passable.

I still say if art is not a career choice, you should say to hell with it and just enjoy making art. So what if it's crap?

Art is fun as a kid because you haven't developed standards yet. Once you get "better", you're never happy with anything anymore and the magic is gone. Good ideas come from bad ones, so keep at it.

As for me, I just have other hobbies that take up all my time. ;)
Brentos @ Sunday, September 8th 2013, 3:03 AM

I still remember when you were complaining about drawing with a mouse years ago and how some of the most excellent artists were commenting how they were doing their stuff with mouses. At the time I was drawing with a mouse too but I don't think I made a comment about how I too drew with a mouse because my aht isn't really that great to begin with, but I do remember thinking 'what's the big deal?' drawing with a mouse isn't that hard what's he complaining about?
Then I came back to Canada and wasn't on the internet for quite a while so I did some drawings here while at Tooth's house with his mouse. That's when I found out that all mouses are not created equal, he had a newer laser mouse and I was having a hell of a time drawing with it. I couldn't even draw circles with it, they were ending up as rounded-off squares and looked like shit. So I got to thinking that my mouse, which is one of the older ones, was manufactured back when they still made quality products which is probably why some of us never had a problem with drawing with a mouse. You probably had (or have) a crappy mouse. I feel your pain and know how frustrating it is trying to draw with a crappy mouse. But anyhow, this looks pretty good! You got the underlying posture down really good.
Brentos @ Sunday, September 8th 2013, 3:08 AM

PS: I still use my first mouse from my first computer! The finger roller doesn't work any more but it just moves around so nice I can't give it up. It's an old Compaq Presario mouse from 1999!

I think you did good, especially if you were using a mouse! You're being quite hard on yourself. Besides, if you kicked yourself in the teeth as a teenager you'd just end up going "I wish I had my teef" in your post-teen years. You'd say it "teef" due to the missing teef.

I like to think I'm preaching to the choir here, that everybody that reads this already knows this. Like it should be pretty obvious to my fellow Deep Thinkers or something. But since America is behind such an iron curtain right now (and Canada for that matter...) I thought this page could be a little enlightening for somebody somewhere.
