Slightly off-topic, but I always wondered why the tips of devil's tails are always triangular.

And, Sydney's deep-thinking -- at least, tail-tip deep. I think Devils' tails are representative of barbed weapons: spear, arrow & trident points.

So my tablet finally broke a while back, which means any kind of creative spark I might have had went to waste really quick. Tonight I decided to experiment a bit, so I went into Shi and tried to create something the way I did in the days before my first tablet. The majority of this was done with the Line/Freehand/Fill tools on a regular mouse, and like I predicted, it's crap.

I want to go back to my teenage years and kick myself in the teeth for thinking I was even passable.
pinderhooks @ Wednesday, August 28th 2013, 12:44 AM

What's the matter with it? It's a good solid drawing!
And drawn with a mouse, no less! Bonus!
I have to say though, I think you look better without that brown hair ;)
Waccoon @ Wednesday, August 28th 2013, 5:16 AM

I still say if art is not a career choice, you should say to hell with it and just enjoy making art. So what if it's crap?

Art is fun as a kid because you haven't developed standards yet. Once you get "better", you're never happy with anything anymore and the magic is gone. Good ideas come from bad ones, so keep at it.

As for me, I just have other hobbies that take up all my time. ;)
Brentos @ Sunday, September 8th 2013, 3:03 AM

I still remember when you were complaining about drawing with a mouse years ago and how some of the most excellent artists were commenting how they were doing their stuff with mouses. At the time I was drawing with a mouse too but I don't think I made a comment about how I too drew with a mouse because my aht isn't really that great to begin with, but I do remember thinking 'what's the big deal?' drawing with a mouse isn't that hard what's he complaining about?
Then I came back to Canada and wasn't on the internet for quite a while so I did some drawings here while at Tooth's house with his mouse. That's when I found out that all mouses are not created equal, he had a newer laser mouse and I was having a hell of a time drawing with it. I couldn't even draw circles with it, they were ending up as rounded-off squares and looked like shit. So I got to thinking that my mouse, which is one of the older ones, was manufactured back when they still made quality products which is probably why some of us never had a problem with drawing with a mouse. You probably had (or have) a crappy mouse. I feel your pain and know how frustrating it is trying to draw with a crappy mouse. But anyhow, this looks pretty good! You got the underlying posture down really good.
Brentos @ Sunday, September 8th 2013, 3:08 AM
avatar
PS: I still use my first mouse from my first computer! The finger roller doesn't work any more but it just moves around so nice I can't give it up. It's an old Compaq Presario mouse from 1999!
Coon @ Sunday, September 22nd 2013, 6:48 AM

I think you did good, especially if you were using a mouse! You're being quite hard on yourself. Besides, if you kicked yourself in the teeth as a teenager you'd just end up going "I wish I had my teef" in your post-teen years. You'd say it "teef" due to the missing teef.

So I guess maybe this needs explanation.

I finally came out to my family after about 10 years of hiding everything from sketches to porn to internet browsing history to poorly explained visits to friends.

It went well, with the majority of responses varying from "Ok." to "Knew it!"

The only people unaware are my parents.

That's going to be a tough sell.

I actually know how you feel. There's only a small group of people I know who know about my comics and my ahtwork. That group has gotten significantly smaller with the recent passing of my friend. I'm surrounded by boring rednecks and yuppies and often wonder it would be like to live in a big city and hang out with more open minded artsy types. I like to think it would be like living in a sit-com and I was the CRAZY Kramer-type who drew comics about dinosaurs that rape people. But nahh I just keep my comic stuff to myself and you CRAZY JERKS!

Good luck with that but do you really need to show your porn to your parents? and...

@ Brentos:
Rule #1 of the fandom is "You don't talk about the fandom."
Rule #2 of the fandom is "You don't talk about the fandom."
Rule #3 of the fandom is "Use SOAP, you filthy con-going furries!"
Also, big cities aren't ALL that artsy. The White areas in the business districts or just off the inner-shitty... maybe. The failed Metropolises of the neighbouring cites are more likely. Besides, I met some Etsy/artsy-types in a suburban Wal-Mart only yesterday!
BTW: I like your spelling (typo?) of "ahtwork." Makes you sound like a Kennedy. Drink up!

@Sydney: I see now -- it's a CLOSET door. But, you drew so much vag here?

Okay now it's making sense. But holy crap I didn't even know you were gay. Seriously I didn't know! But right on I hope it works out for them, as in they realize everyone's different and we're well into the 21st century here. If it doesn't you can always pray to jesus for a cure.

And no problem with my situation, I actually enjoy having the secret identity of a comic artist, even if it is a 'furry' one...

@ Brentos: I don't know how you ever saw those rules, inasmuch as I just made them up and first published here and now.

Long ago there was a discussion on the old VCL forum about rules for attending cons. It was short and to the point and I think the last rule was about furries not bathing. I remember someone else who attended cons quickly agreed that some furries should bathe more. It struck me as odd that someone would go to a con and not bathe the whole weekend but apparently it did/does happen. Your list of rules reminded me of that so I thought it was the same list going around after all these years.

The Cresting Glade Clan is one of many tribes in the Auth''Linq archipelago. Much of their culture revolves around shamanistic rituals and worship of water spirits said to inhabit the islands they inhabit. Clan hierarchy is a matriarchy, with female elders from each village making major decisions while the most the menial tasks are given to unwed females. One would think that men in this society would feel left out, but only men can learn the shamanistic rituals to protect the fisherman and calm the stormy skies. Here we see one such elder and her son. Note the extra adornment and weaponry on the elder compared to that of the teenage apprentice.

Yeah I really need to stop drawing before my drawing hand starts rebelling against me.
