It's difficult in ShiPainter I guess, especially because the exact hardness of the pen tool is difficult to repair with either of the eraser types. The smoothest line is probably gained in PaintBBS by setting a 1-pixel watercolour to a high opacity and going over the place again and again, using the eraser to shape the line.
