In this comic tanukis can change their ball size at will. Sakana has trouble controlling his shape-shifting ability so sometimes his ears get misplaced. I think that's what I had in mind. Yeah that's it. He regained control of himself, repositioned his ears and escaped from the slit. I think he was trying to keep his abilities a secret.
