If you follow Team Fortress 2, then you've probably noticed the Soldier/Demoman war. They gave out sprays to use in game to show allegiance (http://www.teamfortress.com/images/posts/soldier_prop_spray.tga), but I thought the original was a bit boring so I fucked around with it in Photoshop. I thought I would share.

Group Project idea: The Beach Hotel

I mentioned before that I had some ideas for a group project, so I’m going to run this one up the flagpole and see who salutes. My idea is to make a VERY simple Flash point-and-click “game” about walking around a hotel and interacting with the people of DTP.

Everyone could draw their own room, characters, dialogue, and for the more ambitious, animations and puzzles. There will be of course other locations, such as the lobby, corridors, the lift, the bar, the outside, staff areas etc, so if you want to do more, you can. I thought so that the characters can use the other locations, that there could be a day and night version where areas open and close or get more populated.

It would be relatively easy to stitch together in Flash, so it’s unlikely to disappear into the ether like most of my projects. Also I know a few of you know a little bit of actionscript, so the project wouldn’t die if sudden dropped of the face of the Earth.

Not sure on a theme just yet. The original Beach Hotel was a 19th century derelict that dominated the coast of our town. Spooky bloody looking place, and if you believed what you heard at school there was a number Jack Nicholson’s running around the place at any one time. However, grimy is harder to draw and I kida like the idea of a warm, beach resort myself.

Now I’ve bored you enough, anyone interested in this?

If my laptop hadn't died and forced me on to a slower, much older desktop, I would leap at the chance to contribute.

As it is, I'm sort of slowly, jerkily shambling at the chance.

No worries mate, I have a feeling this would take awhile. Besides, adding more rooms wouldn't be a problem.
RooCat @ Friday, January 2nd 2009, 8:21 PM

This kinda sounds like HTH but without the porn
How big should the picture size be and what sorts of limits do we have.

We could link our websites and art dumping grounds when we talk or click a item in the room like a passport or a suit case.

Its been a long time since I did any basic action scripting
might need to learn it all again.
Al @ Friday, January 2nd 2009, 8:49 PM
avatar
No details yet. I want to see hows interested before I info dump. But yeah, first person perspective looking at static rooms to keep it simple. I like the website linking idea. I was going to have posters and books and draws for you to click on. Maybe some discussion trees with the characters (and maybe if I we want to really be clever, have them react different to the player if they are male or female or what-not).
Dejection @ Friday, January 2nd 2009, 11:08 PM
avatar
I don't know how to do any of what you mentioned but it sounds like a fun project. I think Dejection's room would definitely be a dungeon...hmm. YES.
Al @ Friday, January 2nd 2009, 11:29 PM
avatar
You wouldn't need to do any of the coding crap (unless you want to), just the artwork. I can add All the clickable hot-spots to move from one picture to another. Personally, I would have had her room really bland and boring, and have the dungeon hidden in the basement.
Dejection @ Friday, January 2nd 2009, 11:51 PM

Are we gonna be drawing the rooms in oekaki or flash?
Al @ Saturday, January 3rd 2009, 12:00 AM

Any app you like. I'll import the image into Flash and add the transparent buttons over the top of it.
Sydney @ Saturday, January 3rd 2009, 4:31 AM

This is an idea I REALLY like. I'll gladly draw up my own room and extra goodies once you get all the info for us.
Syrynx @ Saturday, January 3rd 2009, 5:26 PM
avatar
This sounds like a really awesome idea, although I have no idea how to do flash or anything like that. If I did get in on the action, I think my room would need a lot of tentacles, water leaks and maybe some non euclidean geometry XD;
Al @ Saturday, January 3rd 2009, 7:31 PM
avatar
Like I keep saying, all you would need to do are pictures. No Flash stuff if you don't want to. Oh, and the Beach Hotel is going to be an odd place for sure. I'm half tempted to make my room 16-bit.
Sydney @ Saturday, January 3rd 2009, 9:35 PM
avatar
Could I do a thing where I had a character like Kaitlyn in one part of the hotel, and to get to my room you'd need to talk to her, or are we constrained to our rooms?
Al @ Saturday, January 3rd 2009, 9:57 PM
avatar
No, I mentioned before that there's public areas, and I was planning on a day/night cycle so characters move about and areas open and lock. I will put a limit on the characters, and possibly have a bit of quality control in the public areas, so characters don't look too out of place.
Sydney @ Saturday, January 3rd 2009, 10:02 PM
avatar
In which case, I'm on it chief!
Satbast @ Sunday, January 4th 2009, 5:23 PM
avatar
Sounds pretty interesting.. I'm wondering, would there be an overall purpose to the wandering, like a game? Y'know, solve a certain # of puzzles, open new passages, end up solving some mystery in the end kind of thing? Or would it mostly just be a bunch of different things you could do to keep your mind busy that didn't nessisarily have anything to do with eachother?
Al @ Sunday, January 4th 2009, 5:47 PM
avatar
Not sure yet, but most likely the latter. If there was a goal, it would have to be kept simple like finding all the keys or some shit (and I will make DAMN sure the ending is as dumb as possible). I'm pretty sure that making a full point and click adventure would be a nightmare to organize. I want to keep this as simple as possible to make it manageable. I've done group projects before, and getting a number of people who aren't getting paid on the same page is like herding cats. I want to keep it so that if someone doesn't finish, it doesn't matter. It'll still work without that persons work, but can still be added later if need be.

However, finding hidden stuff in one room by using another object found in another would be simple enough.
