What bothers me is I don't know what's actually causing the lost pictures, and that might mean Wax will have the same problem.  I'm pretty sure the server is not accepting data from the applets, because uploads seem to work normally.

I'd be a shame to change boards only to find out nothing will improve.  I just can't figure out FunPic.  Their service went all bizzare after they upgraded their servers a few months ago.

I'd recommend starting a new oekaki on a different account and trying it out for a few weeks before converting the old one.

Backing up the memberlist is no big deal, so people wouldn't have to re-register (I would have to do this).  All the pictures and comments would be lost, though, since Wax doesn't store information the same way as Wacintaki.

Let me know what you'd like to do.  I'd like to fix the problem, but I didn't write the applets, so we're kinda out of luck on that one.

Sure.  When you sign up for a FunPic account, keep in mind that you have to manually enable FTP access and the database, and your FTP password cannot be the same as your account password.  Once you have all that information, installation is pretty much the same as with Wacintaki, or I can do it for you.  (E-mail here).

The trick with copying the Wacintaki profiles to a new Wax board is that user flags are interpreted differently, so they have to be properly converted.
