If 775 doesn't work, and 777 does, the server has some kind of special security policy in effect, so 777 should be used.

In reality, it is safe to use a less restrictive CHMOD number these days.  PHP has a much better security system than older scripting languages, like Perl.  With Perl scripts, the correct CHMOD number is critical, because Perl scripts run on the system shell.  PHP, on the other hand, is run specificly as a web service, and those kinds of things don't trash the whole website if something goes wrong.

Hmm...that's strange... I just double-checked all my files and folders and they were all CHMOD to 755! But when I checked under the diagnostics, it still said they were locked. It only disappeared after I CHMOD it to 777. Is that safe?

(And I sent in another email to my host since the first one didn't seem to get through properly)

Your host most likely made a change to their security policy, recently.  The applets require that the server be able to accept raw POST data, but this isn't a very good method, and more and more servers are turning off this capability.

You'll have to contact a system administrator, and let them know that for the oekaki board to function properly, the server's PHP configuration must be changed so it can process HTTP_RAW_POST_DATA.  The oekaki applets do not use multipart encoded forms.

Also, I can tell that your avatars folder is locked, so you may want to view the diagnostics page (under Owner -> Diagnositcs).  Any file or folder that shows up as "locked" will have to be CHMOD to fix it.  Most of the time, CHMODing files to 664, and folders to 775, will correct the problem.  If you have trouble unlocking the base folder, you can ignore it.

For the past couple of weeks, my oekaki board suddenly stopped working. Whenever I tried to save an image, a 403 permissions error would pop up. I saw another topic like this, and I sent an email to the hosters like was suggested but I haven't gotten a reply back yet. I was wondering if there was some way I could fix this by myself?
